Tire pressure affected by Temperature
Posted by Steve from Chula Vista, CA, US on November 30, 2009

How much does the air pressure in a tire change for every 10 degrees that the air in tire increases or decreases?

For example if I check a truck tire with 110 lbs with the ambiant at 70 degrees what will the pressure be when the ambirant temperature is at 80, 90, 100 or 110 degrees and conversly at lower temperatures, 60, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 0, -10, -20, etc.

I assume there is a formula to calculate the PSI increase or decrease for each increase of say 10 degrees.

The tire industry uses the rule of thumb that for every 10 degrees F change in tempurature, tire pressure will change by 2 PSI. Increased tempeerature makes tires pressures go up and lower temperature result in tire pressures becoming lower.

Tire size 1
Posted by Randy from Marion, OH, US on November 24, 2009

I have a truck that has 12R 22.5 tires on the front. I have 11R 22.5 steering tires on hand. Can I mount the 11R in place of the 12R?

Maybe. First, an 11R22.5 tire can be mounted on a 7.50" or an 8.25" wide wheel. A 12R22.5 tire can be mounted on an 8.25" or a 9.00" wide wheel. If you have an 8.25" wide wheel, you are OK. Second, will the 11R22.5 tire carry the load you typically have on your steer tires. Find out the weight on your steer axle when fully loaded. Divide by two to find the load on each tire. The load capasity of the tire is dependent on the size and load range. You can check this on the sidewall of the tire....it will show max load and inflation for the tires near the bead area of both tires.

colored dot on side wall of tire.

What are these colored dots? I have a red one and two green ones on the side walls of the 11R22.5 G372 LHD tires that I bought. Are they to be aligned with the wheel air valve stem or is there alignment not important ?

The red dot is the high point of the radial first harmonic. This was measured in the plant before the tire was shipped. It is intended to be matched with the dimple on the wheel for a more uniform (round) tire wheel assembly. A green dot on a Goodyear tire simply means that it was x-rayed before it left the plant.

tire wear 1
Posted by mike from california, PA, US on November 18, 2009

i have a tire starting to wear uneven just the far outside edge is wearing but only on half the tire in spots on that half what could be the issue

What wheel postion (steer or drive)? What kind of vehicle (long haul, regional, off road)? I will assume it is a steer tire and that you are in a long haul situation. Sounds like river wear due to a very slow rate of wear. If true, it is fairly common and not something you need to worry about. This will not effect the overall wear or performance of the tire.
