Tire Alignments
Posted by Randy from Tyler, TX, US on April 6, 2009

Is there a specific guideline for checking alignments on HD and MD trucks and then a guideline as to when to align. I am looking for information based on the different applications such as city driving, regional carriers, as well as long distance carriers.

We publish alignment recommendations in our Radial Tire and Retread Service Manual (available on-line at www.goodyear.com/truck in the References section). But, each vehicle manufacture also has specific recommendations for their vehicles.

tandem axle mismatch
Posted by Jeff from Winona, MN, US on April 6, 2009

We replaced the front drive axle tires on a tandem drive tractor. We retreaded 4 Steelmark’s with Bandag Fueltech Drive tread. (23/32nd I believe). The 4 tires on the rear axle are Michelins with 6-8 32nds left. There is about 1″ height difference between the tires on the front and rear axle. What am I damaging by running this way? What’s the max recommended mismatch in this situation? Will it matter if I use Michelin (or like) or Goodyear (or like) casings to retread for the rear axle as far as tire size? (I assume each wheel end should/must be the same type)

I'm not an expert at this but I think there is much greater concern with side to side differences in tire diameter than axle to axle. If I were you I would check with the vehicle manufacture (dealer) or contact the axle manufacturer. They would know the answer for the brand of axle you have.
