Sidewall Cracking
Posted by Joe from Sioux Falls, SD, US on December 11, 2008

The steer tires on my Volvo 610 truck 5 years old and are cracking. These cracks begin near the rim and run the entire circumference of the tires in about a 1 inch band. The cracks appear to be getting larger. This truck pulls a large RV (5th wheel trailer) and does sit for months at a time in RV parks in Tucson, AZ during the winter months. I do not cover the tires. I assume that the cracking is a result of ultraviolet rays and not a mechanical problem. My Question: At what point should one be concerned about the size of sidewall cracks? Is there a rule of thumb on this subject? The tires do not leak air. Thanks - Joe

A radial tire service manual recently published by the TMC (Technology and Maintenance Council of the ATA) suggests that if weather checking on the sidewall of a tire is more than 2/32's of an inch deep, the tire should be removed from service. Your assumption about the cause is most likely correct. Long exposure to direct sunlight can cause this condition to occur.

245/70R19.5 vs 8R19.5
Posted by danny from west monroe, LA, US on December 11, 2008

Can you mount 245/70R19.5 tires on rims that came with 8R19.5 and what is the difference between these two tires?

The only approved (Tire and Rim Association) rim width that is common to both sizes is 6.75". If your rims are 6.75: wide, you are OK otheriwise, no. The differences between the tires are many. The 8R19.5 is a tall and narrow but the 245/70R19.5 is short and wide. The wider 245/70R19.5 might rub suspension components or a fender. They have different load carrying capacities and recommended inflation pressures.
