Tire Age and Replacement
Posted by Judith from Williamsburg, VA, US on August 24, 2007
I see you have had one question on this subject, and I would like to go a bit further.
I am a woman traveling alone and wish to keep my MH in tip top shape. I have a 2000 Fleetwood RV with the original duals in size 245/70R19.5. I was told if tires are over 7 years old they should be replaced regardless of how they look on the outside. I was told that tires rot from inside out. I have also been told that tires contain an oil in the rubber and if sitting (as when parked in a campground for 3+ months) does not stay evenly ditributed in the tire. This causes the tire to dry out and be a potential hazard. Would you please advise me of the fact or fiction of this information and also, does the tread wear guideline apply to all tires no matter what vehicle they are used on?
Goodyear does not have a tire replacement policy with regard to age but, the RVIA suggests tire replacement every 5 - 7 year.s I can not argue with the RVIA with regard to their industry.
Although there are oils in the compounds that make up tires, these oils will not drain out the bottom of the tread if the vehicle sits for a few months. I also do not agree that tires "rot" from the inside out. What we do often see are tires that have been sitting for a long time with direct sunlight on them will begin to "dry rot". A small network of cracks can develop on the sidewall of the tire which can eventually result in one or more large cracks that can eventually get deep enough to cause conceern. If the RV is not moved for months at a time, it should be jacked up so that most or all of the load is taken off the tires and if the tires could be exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time, cover the tires with something that will not permit light to come through. I do not understand your last question but, I assume you are talking about a rule-of-thumb that says steer tires should be replaced when the reach 2/32nds and drive tires when they reach 1/32 tread depth.
Off Road Tire Recommendation
Posted by Max Junior from Port-au-Prince, OT, HT on August 21, 2007
Looking for off-road tires typically 11.00R20 or 11R22.5 Can you recommend some? Rough terrain and 30T payloads.
Not a lot of information to go on here but, I suggest the Goodyear G288 MSA. This tire is available in both of the sizes you list and is a mixed service (on and off highway), all position tire (good for steer, drive or trail). In the 11R22.5 size, we offer this tire with DuraSeal Technology (self seals punctures in the tread area up to 1/4" in diameter).
