Wide Base Tires
Posted by Rick on January 15, 2007

I’m doing some research on the wide base tires in comparrision to the standard duals. We are in the grain bussiness. Our fleet which consists of four trailers are all standard 22.5 hub piloted. We are in the market to purchase a used piece of equipment. I found what we are looking for as far as trailer specs go. The only road block would be the wide base tires which this trailer has. My question: What concerns or questions should I be asking myself, to see if this would be a wise buying decision. How are these tires stacking up in the industry? Are the people who run them satisfied with them. What is there feed back. Can you help me?

For your type of operation, the advantage of wide base tires could be the fact that each wide base tire and wheel probably weighs less than two standard tires and wheel. This could equate to the abiltiy to carry more cargo if you often max out in weight. The potential concerns...replacement tire availability and maybe wheel bearing life (depending on the wheel offset). If the trailer was not built with wider axles and the tract is narrower than you other trailers, you might be concerned with stability.
