Drive Tire Cupping
Posted by ed on September 8, 2006
We put new tires on about 8 or 9 months ago. They have alot of miles on them. The tires were great for the first 2/3 months but, now they are cupping badly. What causes this?
Especially if you have an air ride suspension, it could be worn shocks that are keeping the drive tires from having "firm" contact with the road. Tires do not like to "bounce".
Tire Pressure

http://www.goodyear.com/rv/tirecare/loadinflationtables.html
On that Goodyear link it states “for this reason, air pressure should be checked based on the load on each individual tire. Inflation pressure should be adjusted to handle the maximum tire load, and all tires on the axle should carry the same inflation pressure.”
My question is: If a coach has an A-Frame front suspension, as opposed to an axle, should front steer tires be the same pressure according to the highest weight front wheel?
My conventional wisdom says yes but the statement above has me questioning as Im not sure if a a-frame suspended front end is still considered an axle.
Conventional wisdom is correct. The type of suspension does not change the load the tire is carrying. If you have a way to determine the weight being carried by each tire when the vehicle is loaded, determine the tire pressure for that "position" by using the highest load being carried in that position (steer, drive or trailer "axle".
Harsh Ride

Some time back (2004) Newmar Corp motorhome owners began complaining about rough ride and it became conventional wisdom that this was due to the aspect ratio i.e. 275/70R22.5’s run rougher than 275/80R22.5. This makes no sense to me since its such a small increase in sidewall and I feel it must be because one can lower inflation pressure for same axle load with the larger aspect ratio tire. Would you agree?
I would agree that it is probably a combination of the increased inflation pressure AND the shorter sidewall of the lower profile tire.
Portable Wheel Alignment

What do you think of portable wheel alignment equipment?
Alignment equipment (portable or otherwise) is as good as the person using it. If you are hiring someone to do alignments, make sure you have checked out their background and training. If you are doing it yourself, learn all you can about using the equipment.
Nitrogen

What happens if you are forced to mix nitrogen with air if the gas station does not have nitrogen?
IF there are advantages to nitrogen over air in tires then diluting the amount of nitrogen in the tires dilutes the advantages. It is more important to keep the proper inflation pressure in the tires than it is to try to keep 100% nitrogen in the tires.
