Used Tires
Posted by Tim on July 18, 2006

Can tires be recycled? If what are some ways in which it can be recycled. Can tires be used with asphalt to increase the flexablity of roads? If so how?

This is a little out of my area of "expertise" but I will give it a try. The most common way tires are "recycled" is retreading. By taking a worn tire and grinding away the remaining tread to create a textured surface, a new tread can be applied. Of course, this is common in the trucking industry but not common for consumer tires. Other uses for old tires: in asphalt (as mentioned), ground into pellets to be used as fuel and bundled together to use as off-shore reefs.
