Replacing Steer Tires after Alignment
Posted by Tim on July 14, 2006

Should we as a practice replace steer tires after an alignment? We are specifically questioning replacing steers with thick tread, but they have some uneven side wear. Some of this wear manifests in feathering or flat spotting of the outside or inside edge. Do you think that this type of wear will normally cause a front end vibration?

Some irregular wear conditions on tires can tend to get worse once they are started. The feathering you mentions might clean up after the alignment corrections are made but, the "flat spotting" might create front end vibration and get worse as miles are accumulated. It is probably a good idea to replace the tires in this case. The current tires would probably be OK as trailer tires or retread them as drive tires.
