Miss Matched Tread Designs on Drive Axles
Posted by Tim on June 7, 2006
My boss told me to take a tractor and on the rear of this tractor there was a set of 8 tires with each tread design different. Is that safe and will I be breaking the law by driving that tractor?
Having different tread patterns across the drive axles(s) of an over the road tractor is not a problem (and not against the law, to my knowledge). The concern is the potential for duel tires having different diameters due to different tread patterns (or different tire brands) or different states-of-wear (a worn out tire next to a new tire). We recommend that dual tires have diameter differances of 1/4 inch or less. The larger of the two tires will carry most of the load. This can cause both tires to wear irregularly and potentially create an overload situation on the larger tire.
camper tires

I have a set of Goodyear ST 225/75R15 on my camper now. I inflate to the recommened 50psi before I leave on a trip. The tires are 7 years old and are showing sign of cracks on the sidewall. I want to replace with a heavier ply tire but also do not want to knock all my gear to the floor while driving. Your suggestions please. The camper weighs 7900 lbs dry.I would like to take some of the side to side sway out of the tires while driving.
I assume you are running our ST225/75R15 Load Range C Marathon tires now (rated to carry 2150 lbs at 50 psi) and are considering going to the same size tire in Load Range D (rated to carry 2540 at 65 psi). I hope you have 4 tires on this camper because with 2 tires, you are overloaded even with the LR-D tires. If all this is true, I think that new tires are a good idea considering the sidewall cracking on the old ones. I also think that moving up to the LR-D tires and 65 psi inflation pressure will help take some of the sway out of the camper.
