SUPER SINGLE TIRES
Posted by Tim on April 1, 2006

I am looking for any info about super single tires. I don’t know if they are something that I would want or am even able to use efficiently. I have a single drive axle tractor with a 48ft spread axle flatbed trailer. I am hauling between 10,000# to 30,000# of steel on a daily dedicated run. What do you think about using this kind of tires?

There are two generally accepted advantages of wide base single tires. Improved fuel economy and weight savings are the advantages. These advanages are maximized if 8 drive tires are replaced by 4 wide base tires and 8 trailer tires are replaced by 4 wide base tires. In your case, you only have 4 drive tires to replace with 2 wide base tires. In my opinion, a spread axle trailer would not be a good application for wide base tires. Usually, operators of spread axle trailers use inexpensive (because they wear out quickly or are damaged)and narrow tread tires (because they turn easier). Wide base tires are neither. I can't imagine that wide base singles would be a cost advantage for your operation.
