Question 93
Posted by James on June 27, 2005

Does the tire industry have a formula for tire life increases for a reduction in temperature? I know if you run a tire low on air pressure and it builds up heat that the life expectancy is usually lower. If you run a truck tire 50-100 degrees higher then a comparible tire what would be your expected loss of tire life if any?

Heat is a tires worst enemy. If you can keep the internal tire rubber temperature under 210 F (1" below the tire shoulder), you can run that tire troublefree. The hotter the tire runs, the faster the tread will scrub off. Running hi speed, low inflation, and heavy loads will cause even faster treadwear.

Question 95

I have a large delivery fleet ranging from mini vans to tractor trailers with the mojority being walk in step vans with 8R-19.5 tires. The actual load weights will vary for each vehicle. Is there a tire pressure formula I can use to get the best fuel mileage and tire life?

We have a load/inflation chart for every tire type and size. If you know the actual tire load, we can tell you the proper inflation pressure to maximize mileage and fuel economy. Please send us your mailing address and we will be happy to send you an engineering databook (acohn@goodyear.com)

According to Goodyear.com’s Load/Inflation page, my 6 245/70R19.5F RV tires can handle up to 24,040 lbs at 85 PSI. Can I safely inflate to 90 or 95 PSI considering my coach has a GCWR of 25,700? Thank you.

Yes you can safely inflated the tire to 95 PSI. At 95 PSI, the load carrying capacity would be 4265 lbs for each drive tire and 4335 for each steer tire

Question 92

Hi Mr. Cohn, I am the Cumberland County Emergency Medical Services Fleet Maintenance Officer. I have one of the largest fleets of ambulances in the state of NC. We use Good Year Tires; 19.5 and I read an article about Good Year’s TVTRACK Software in Fleet Owner Magazine. This software seems to provide a lot of tire data collections. How would I be able to get more detailed info on this program, and how much does it cost? Thanks, Mike Griffin

Cost is $495 for our Tvtrack software with free upgrades and free technical support. We would be happy to supply a demo. Please send me an email with your contact information at acohn@goodyear.com
