Question 64
Posted by Philip on May 4, 2005

Trailer down time is becoming increasingly costly for Fleets that are the leaders in service. A large issue with a non-captured over the road National trailer fleet is preventive maintenance when referring to tire punctures and tire related breakdowns. Trailers are becoming much more technologically advanced in terms of braking (ABS) and other driveline components. Is Goodyear and other Tire manufacturers experimenting with “run flat” or “puncture resistant” tire for a trailer/heavy duty tractor application? In the past load issues and no/little re-treadability has been the barrier. Do you see any future in this type of tire technology that is being used on passenger cars in the trailer/med/heavy duty tractor applications? I believe that a “run flat” or “puncture resistant” tire would be the next stage in trailer evolution.

There are not any projects on the books exploring runflat technology for trailer applications to date. Goodyear has come out with its DURASEAL technology which essentially is a sealant built into the casing between the tread package and the liner that will seal punctures up to 1/4". It is currently available for the mixed service market segment only. I don't see this going into long haul trailers tires anytime soon.
