Anti Idling Laws in Europe?
September 10, 2007 @ 9:03 am
Q. Hi John, I read in your profile that you are invoved in AI ‘issues’, even with European references. Now I like to know if there is (any) “anti idling law” in Europe. I’ve been on Google for hours now, and just can’t find any info regarding the European side of it. Maybe you can give me a hint (I’d be very happy with any documentation) Thanks in advance for your time!
A. I've contacted my counter part in Germany, our product is actually manufactured in Germany. He has indicated to me that the german and the british Highway Code have regulations for anti idling and that the other european countries have comparable national regulations to avoid idling.

Anti-Idling systems

Q. Due to the anti-idling fervor in the United States air conditioning and heating systems being sold into our industry vary from battery operated systems, stand-alone diesel powered systems, shore power and combination systems including devices such as inverters.
All such systems are aimed at eliminating idle time.
If a truck engine is shut off what redundency is built into the truck or such systems to assure the driver that his truck will start when he is ready to move?
After all, we need those truck batteries to start the engine. What if they (the truck batteries) fail or begin to fail during the engine stopped period due to poor maintenance, end of life cycle, over charging or under charging, extreme cold or heat?
A. Lets tackle fuel operated heaters first and then we'll deal with battery powered operated A/C systems. Fuel Operated Heaters draw a minimal amount of amperage off of the truck starting batteries, on average less than 1amp/hr. That is less than trucks running board lights. Remember the fundamentals of Fuel Operated heaters are that they are actually burning fuel and that is what generates the heat source not the batteries. Additionally, Espar fuel operated heaters have a low voltage cut off, which means that should the sensors determine that the battery has fallen lower than 10.5 volts, the heater shuts off, so that the driver can restart his truck. It is up to the driver however to manage all is other amp drawing amenities e.g. Microwave, T.V., Computer, etc. As for battery powered A/C systems, I would recommend that you put additional batteries on your truck so that you do not comprise the integrity of the starting batteries. Espar does this with their partners on the A/C side, Bergstrom who brings the “NITE” system to market. Which is a fully battery powered A./C system. The additional batteries are isolated from the starting batteries via an isolator or separator and are only recharged after the starting batteries are charged first.

A. While you do not have to retrofit your trucks with any anti-idling technology. The one thing you won't be able to do is idle your vehicles. You risk being fined, and the fines can be substantial. If you find yourself idling for heat a lot of the time, I would certainly recommend that you outfit your fleet with Espar fuel operated heaters.

in transit heat
August 1, 2007 @ 2:31 pm
Q. Do you have a system that will warm or maintain a 70 degree temperature in an insulated jacketed tank trailer with heat panels on the bottom of the trailer.Your diesel fired unit with ciculating pump on the tractor ??
A. Yes we do. We would have to discuss what is being heated and what the volume is, however Espar has a wide range of coolant heaters. Our smallest is 17,500 BTU/hr and our largest is 120,000 BTU/hr. So I'm sure we could meet your goals.

Idling of Utility Bucket Trucks
July 17, 2007 @ 6:41 pm
Q. I sell new Versalift bucket Trucks.
Many of my customers are beginning to talk about ACPU’s to combat the idling of the trucks- most are F-550’s or similar trucks all the way up to class 8. What kind of a unit do you recommend we install to help with emmissions and can these run 7-13gpm pumps with 1500-2500 psi hydralic pumps on them?
A. I'm sure for the most part that you are probably idling for heat. If that is the case I would recommend the installation of Espar fuel Operated Heaters. These heating systems are very small and can fit into the palm of your hand, weighing about 5-7 lbs. They run off of the existing fuel tank and are quiet easily installed. Our applications cover all the vehicle models and sizes that you mention in your question. It would be the same unit for the F-550 as the Class 8 truck. The units are the Airtronic D2 bunk heater and the Hydronic 5 engine pre-heater. Both these systems run independently of the engine and don't interfer with any other system.
