Question 40
November 7, 2005 @ 12:00 am
Q. Do the coolant heaters fit within the definition of APU?
Example Webasto’s Thermo 50, DBW 2010 etc.
A. No, an APU gives you 3 things, the ability via a generator to give you heat, air-conditioning and power. The units you mention above heat coolant, these are diesel fired coolant heaters not generators. They can bring engines up to temperature and additionally via a heat exchanger provide heat to interiors. The are much smaller the APU's and easier to install.

A. I don't know of hand but you might want to check the web. Always do your homework when purchasing equipment and always buy from a company with a great reputation and wide service network.

Q. What does the average over the road driver idle in a years time? What is the average fuel useage per hour ideling the truck?
A. 1,200 - 1,600 hours a year.
A typical class 8 truck at 900 rpm uses approx. 3/4 - 1 gallon an hour.

Question 43

Q. WE HAVE 3 CLASS 8 TRUCKS. WHAT WOULD IT COST TO PUT A SYSTEM ON EACH TRUCK? THANKS,
KEN
A. Ken, you're probably looking at anywhere between $1,400 -$1,500 installed. The heater I'm quoting is Espar's Airtronic D2 bunk heater.

Question 44
October 14, 2005 @ 12:00 am
Q. I presume idleing overnight takes 1 gal per hr. What does an auxiliary heating or heat/air system cost? How many nights in the truck for payback at 8 hours, $3.00 plus per gallon?
A. You are correct with your assumption on 1 gallon an hour at idle. An Espar Airtronic D2 bunk heater costs approx. $1,400 installed. Payback all depends on how often you are using the heater and that depends on where you're travelling, are you in colder climates. We have seen on average a ROI of less than a year, with your parameters the calculation figures to pay you back in 58 days.
