Q. DC Airco or similar products, use battery power to power AC unit: How well do they do in 90+ degree weather; How long will a charge last at such temps; Other systems use own batteries, are they better then those using your truck batteries?
A. There are so many variables when it comes to battery powered products and here are a few things you should think about when spec’ing your product. What size is the cab volume? how many batteries does your truck have? What is the reserve capacity of the batteries? Are the batteries well maintained? Is the cab already cooled or are you brining the temperature down on its own?
What works today might give you 1/2 hr less tomorrow. I would recommend that any A/C system that you purchase you should add additional batteries. We do this with the Bergstom AC, commonly know as the “NITE” system. This system comes with a seperator which essentially isolates the system from the starting batteries but charges the additional batteries when the truck is running.

Q. I have recently seen a new player on the market. It is called TriPac from Thermo King. Would you have any outlook on this version, pros and cons. It seems there are so many out here now that it’s almost confusing to try and compare all of them.
A. I have considerable knowledge on the Tri _Pac, primarily because it features the Espar Airtronic D2 Airheater as it’s heat source. This is what makes the Tri-Pac such a unique APU being brought to the market. The point is why use a generator to provide heat when it’s more efficiient to use a fuel fired heating system. This system was developed by a T.K. dealer in Wisconsin. Thermo King Coporate realized the potential and secured the rights for the system. One advantage of T.K Corporate bringing this to market is their extensive distribution system, which is something you can have faith in when purchasing the product or servicing the product.

Q. What is the advantages and disadvantages between APUs, Shorepower, battery power, and any other products being sold to reduce engine idle.
A. Advantages vary, APU’s/Gen Sets are one of the most sensible options, primarily becuase they can do everything, heating, cooling and provide power for hotel loads. They are also mobile applications and go where the truck goes. The downside is they are heavy and expensive. Shorepower is economical but you need to find a location where that power is available and accessable. Battery powered units are typically lighter and more efficient, the downside is you need to manage your battery systems carefully. Most Battery powered products do have over and under voltage cut outs on them so you can always start your engine.
