Question 23
Saturday, April 16th, 2005 @ 12:00 am
Q. I’ve heard drivers talk about installing gasoline-powered generators on their equip. to power heat & air-cond.-will that not be the same as using diesel as far as the emissions are concerned? Also, how will it be legal to prohibit idling until idle-aire is widely available to substitute? Drivers have to have a reasonable temperature in […]
A. Not exactly. The generators that are being used to power heat and air-conditioning are typically small 2 cylinder engines, they are significantly smaller than the large 6-12 cylinder Class 8 engines manufactured today which have can hav e up to 14 liter displacements this in turn reduces the amount of emissions being produced by them. As far as prohibiting idling is concerned, there are many alternatives to reduce idling than generators and idle-aire. Remember, idle-aire facilities are fixed alternatives and there are only so many truck stops and rest areas available, mobile anti-idling technologies are widely available and you can look into these technologies as well.

Q. Is there a website that lists all APU/Anti-Idle Engine makers? Starting to research and would like to understand each to compare them. Thanks!
A. This website should get you started,
http://www.epa.gov/smartway/idlingtechnologies.htm
it lists many of the premier manufacturers, however, there are many new manufacturers surfacing everyday because of the momentum and opportunities that I can see occuring in the anti-idling technology market. Becareful when you choose your technology, source a good manufacturer with a good reputation and service network. The website is a government one and I’m not to sure on how often they update it.
